Each year, the ECMA board of directors chooses an individual, group or organization that has made a significant impact on the welfare of the music industry in Atlantic Canada to receive the prestigious FACTOR Industry Builder Award. This award recognizes the recipient's genuine contributions made not simply for personal gain but for the greater development of the East Coast music industry. This year, the board is pleased to announce Corner Brook's Lloyd Bartlett as the recipient of this prestigious award.

The Musician's Achievement Award recognizes a sideman/session musician who exemplifies professionalism and quality musicianship on recordings and/or live performances of East Coast music, and deserves to be recognized for his or her cumulative contributions. The Board of Directors of the ECMA determines the recipient of this award annually. This year's recipient is Newfoundland legend Sandy Morris.

The Atlantic Lottery Volunteer of the Year Award, chosen by the local event committee, was presented to Tina Dolter, who chaired the ECMA Arts & Cultural Linkages Committee (ACLC). A first of its kind for the East Coast Music Association, the ACLC put a true Corner Brook cultural feel on this year's East Coast Music Awards, Festival & Conference. The committee worked to promote the ECMAs in a unique way, through a variety of art "happenings" which took place the months leading up to and during the ECMA Festival & Conference.

In addition, five individuals were awarded Stompin' Tom Awards. These awards are presented annually to one individual or group from each of the ECMA's five regions (Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Cape Breton and mainland Nova Scotia). Stompin' Tom, one of Canada's best-known musicians, was presented with the Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993. He accepted the award on the condition that he could return it and requested that an award be created to honour those who have made a long-term contribution to the East Coast music industry, paving the way for the many successful artists of today. A committee of Atlantic Canadian folklorists, in consultation with the ECMA board of directors, determines the recipients.

This year's Stompin' Tom Award recipients are:

Narcisse Gautreau: Prince Edward Island
Mark Hill: New Brunswick
Ray Walsh: Newfoundland & Labrador
Joyce Seamone: Mainland Nova Scotia
Donald Angus Beaton: Cape Breton

The Industry Awards Brunch is sponsored by FACTOR (Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings) and was hosted this year by Newfoundland's own Phil Churchill.

ECMA 2009 caps off a four-day extravaganza of multi-genre musical performances, conference events and workshops tonight with its Music Awards Gala. Performances by Hey Rosetta!, Jill Barber, Rawlins Cross, Tara Oram and many others are expected, and talented winners in a variety of categories will be announced. This year's East Coast Music Awards Show is hosted by CBC Radio's Jian Ghomeshi and Newfoundland artist Damnhait Doyle, and will be held at the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook, NL.

This year's show will return to the airwaves, with CBC Television to broadcast the evening gala live (at 8:30 p.m. NT, 8 p.m. AT and 7 p.m. ET) on its digital channel, Bold, as well as a live stream online at cbc.ca/eastcoastmusic. The main CBC-TV network will carry the awards at 11 p.m. (in all time zones, 11:30pm in NL).

The 2009 East Coast Music Awards, Festival & Conference has received financial support from the Government of Canada through ACOA and Service Canada, Province of Newfoundland and Labrador through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and the City of Corner Brook. The East Coast Music Association would also like to acknowledge the financial support of FACTOR and the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage (Canada Music Fund) and of Canada's private radio broadcasters.
